New Nail Trend Alert: Behold the Caviar Manicure

Nail polish trends come and go (see: the French manicure) but luckily there’s always something new, wonderful, and wacky in the pipeline. Last year it was all about crackle top coats andmagnetic polish. We hadn’t really seen anything new yet this year in the world of nails…until now.

UK nail polish brand Ciaté, which will be available soon at Sephora in the US, is launching new kits in April to create what they are calling the “Caviar mani.” (The company’s reps tell us those kits will be available stateside, too.) Now, this is not a new idea: We saw it on the runway at Cushie et Ochs’ Fall 2011 show where Dashing Diva nail artists used seed beads from the designers’ collection to create the three dimensional nail look.

As far as nail art goes, it’s pretty easy to DIY, as you can see here. You basically just sprinkle beads all over some wet nail polish and let it dry. But this is the first time we’ve seen it offered in the convenience of a kit–Kiss and Makeup reports that the beads will be offered in three colors: black, white, and multi (seen above, which will make your nails look like a happy little cookie.) We fully expect other brands to follow suit–it seems like a concept that’s pretty easy to produce and the bottles of beads can sit right next to bottles of polish on the shelf.

Will caviar nails be the new glitter?

Jessica Stam is the new face of the CoverGirl LipPerfection print ads, and a few weeks ago we got to sit at a spring trend mini-seminar with makeup guru Pat McGrath and Stam. McGrath is fresh off her first-ever movie gig, helping to transform Rooney Mara into Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And now she’s prepping to do the makeup looks for 24 fashion shows in New York and Milan, but we got to catch up with her before the madness starts.

CoverGirl is releasing some videos highlighting their new spring beauty launches which feature McGrath giving some how-tos, with Jessica Stam as muse. Fashionista has the second such video exclusively today, and we also had the opportunity to ask McGrath all our pressing lipstick application questions. Check out Stam’s transformation below, and also get answers to such complicated issues as: When should you use a lip brush?

Click through for our full interview with Pat McGrath and the new CoverGirl video.

Fashionista: Any hard and fast rules for matching lip color to skin tone?
Pat McGrath (via email): For fair skin: pinks, nudes and cherry reds without brown and yellow undertones accentuate the porcelain radiance of your skin. CoverGirl Blast Flipstick in Whisper is a wonderful light pink against the creamy complexion. Medium to olive tones look beautiful in apricots, beiges and nudes with brown undertones such as CoverGirl Blast Flipstick in Cheeky. Dark skin tones look rich in various shades of mauve, red and berry such as CoverGirl Blast Flipstick in Flashy.

Tips for making lipstick last longer?
Lipstick holds longest with a smooth surface, so prep your lips by gently buffing with Laura Mercier Face Polish. Next apply [a lip balm] for a neutral moisturized base. A lip pencil such as CoverGirl LipPerfection Lipliner adds a layer of pigment and helps the color sustainability. Outline the whole lip with the liner then color in the entire mouth to prevent lines and blot with a tissue before applying the matte side of CoverGirl Blast Flipstick in Stunner for a lasting look. Set the lips with a light dusting of loose powder to prolong the color.

When do you recommend using a lip brush vs. just the tube itself?
I recommend using a lip brush when wearing lipstick for a precise lip and use the tube for lipglosses. The lip brush distributes the hue naturally among the lips and attains a longer lasting pigment without too much lipstick to avoid textured and dry lips.

How do you recommend prepping lips beforehand?
Always prepare lips with a soft base by using on a warm washcloth rubbing lightly in a circular motion to exfoliate dead skin. Before applying lipstick, the trick is to apply lip liner by outlining the entire mouth, then coloring in the lips to prevent feathering.

BB Creams Are the Hottest New Product to Hit the Beauty Aisle–Here’s What They Can Do For You

Photo: MAC

There’s a (pseudo) new kid on the beauty block here in the US, and from the looks of it, BB creams—otherwise known as Beauty Balm, Beauty Benefit, Blemish Base, Beblesh Balm, or Blemish Balm–are quickly becoming the crème de la crème of the cosmeceuticals (skin care + makeup) industry.

BB creams can be traced back to 1950s Germany, when Dr. Christine Schrammek created a salve to aid skin healing in post-peel and laser surgery patients, while also masking splotchy, inflamed redness and shielding sensitive skin from the sun. Fast forward 50+ years, when BB creams exploded in popularity in Asia, Japan, and Europe–thanks to drop-dead gorgeous Korean actresses like Song Hye Kyo singing its praises–and suddenly everyone is clamoring to introduce their own to the US market.

Why? “The appeal of a highly efficient, multi-tasking product such as this couldn’t be limited for long—the phenomenon grew and expanded throughout Asia, and now to North America,” Nick Gavrelis, Vice President of Product Development for MAC Cosmetics, told us.

The reason they’re so appealing is this: If you find yourself slathering on a ton of products on a daily basis, all-in-one BB creams could be your cosmetic savior, since they potentially save time, space, and most importantly—cold hard cash. “It’s a brilliant concept that combines many complex steps in a woman’s typical skincare regimen,” said Gavrelis.

Think of it this way—BB creams can do any or all of the following, depending on which one you choose: hydrate like a moisturizer; fight acne and aging like a specialized treatment; nourish like a serum; brighten like a toner; smooth skin texture like a primer; cover blemishes like a concealer; even out your skin tone like a sheer foundation; refine fine lines and wrinkles like an eye cream; add luminosity like a highlighter; and protect against UVA/UVB rays like a sunscreen.

In addition to being efficient at providing superficial covering and brightening, they can be quite beneficial to your skin as well. “BB cream isn’t just a tinted moisturizer, it’s first and foremost a skin treatment,” Cindy Lin told us. Lin is the Director of Product Development and Beauty Solutions for Dr. Jart, a leading skincare brand in Korea. She said, “All have a host of skin nourishing ingredients—some have collagen-boosting peptides, some have detoxifying properties, and some deliver deep hydration.”

So how should you use it? Generally you should emulsify it in the palm of your hands and massage it into your skin in small circles. But for an extra radiant look, MAC Senior Artist John Stapleton suggests focus on applying it through the center of your face. “The added tint provides the brightening benefit.”

10 Must-Have Nail Colors for Spring

When it starts to get really cold, the only thing we can think about is warmth. And the sun. And color. While we can’t have the first two quite yet, cosmetics companies are meeting our need for the third: The  spring nail polish collections  are here! (Or will be very soon.) While there were a lot of neutral nails on spring runways, it seems like color for real-life nails is going nowhere. From bright pastels to shocking neon, we’re happy that nails aren’t going to be so serious this season.

Click through to see our ten favorite shades from the collections.

Butter London Disco Biscuit: We decided to set the tone with this uber-cheery fuchsia with glittery flecks. Plus it’s called Disco Biscuit. Win-win. (Nordstrom, $14)

Deborah Lippmann, Mermaid Dream and On the Beach: Deborah Lippmann has obviously spent some time at the beach, and we want to, too. If you can’t decide between the two (like us) alternate a color on each nail. (Available in March)

Zoya Skylar: This color is the same shade as a hydrangea. Pretty. (Zoya, $8)

Chanel June: Pantone pronounced that 2012 is a tangerine year, but we like the softer more Creamsicle look of this gorgeous Chanel. (Chanel, $26)

Nicki Minaj for OPI, Did It To ‘Em: We really love her whole cheery collection, but we especially like this safety-stripe chartreuse. (Ricky’s, $9.99)

Sally Hansen Gem Crush, Showgirl Chic:Gold glitter with a bit of pink mixed in. This is the closest to neutral that we’re going to show you. (Walgreens, $6.99)

Essie Navigate Her: Pistachio popped up in a lot of collections this season. We’ve been sporting Essie’s version and racking up the compliments. (Available in February)

Hunger Games China Glaze, Luxe & Lush: This one could play well alone or as a top coat on top of a pastel.Katniss would probably never wear it, though. (TBA)

NARS Diamond Life: Purple is another color that’s everywhere this season. We’re blaming Prabal Gurung. (NARS, $17)

Givenchy Poppy no.177: This poppy is proof that red can work in the spring, too. (TBA)

Ever wonder what the best powders are for you?

Well, we always wonder.. Does it really matter which powder i use, i mean after all it’s powder
aren’t they all the same? Well, the answer is no.. I mean especially if your on a budget.. So here Are Some
powders that might be best for you, and your skin type, as well as your pocket book!!

Whether you are fed up of blending liquid, or you’re in a rush, there’s a lot to be said for powder foundations! I’ve been searching for the best ones, and here are my top !

1. Bare Escentuals bareMinerals SPF15

Price: $28 at sephora.com
This powder foundation provides a flawless base for make up, and even protects skin against the sun! The matte finish is divine, and it goes on easily and smoothly to provide you with a very smooth, poreless face. And, its completely free of harsh chemicals and preservatives, so if you have sensitive skin this is the perfect powder for you!

2. Make Up For Ever Duo Mat

Price: $32 at sephora.com
This is a real rival for liquid foundation! It lasts all day, and is oil free, so it won’t make your skin greasy. It goes on thick enough to cover blemishes and give an even skintone, but doesn’t suffocate the skin. Dreamy!

3. Philosophy The Supernatural Airbrushed Canvas SPF15

I love this foundation! Not only is the powder brilliant, the applicator makes it quick and easy to apply, and leaves you looking flawless, and poreless! Its free from everything that can upset skin, and comes in eight colours, so whatever your skinproblem, this can cure it while keeping you looking great. Once you’ve tried this, nothing else will be good enough!

4. “Hello Flawless!” Benefit Cosmetics SPF15

This is more of a cover up then a foundation, as the brush makes it quite hard to apply it to your whole face, but it blends beautifully. Use a sponge to apply it for a sheer, natural cover up, or stick with the brush to cover blemishes or spots. There is a colour for everyone, too, and the darker colours make brilliant blushers too!

5. NARS powder foundation

This powder foundation comes in a very handbag friendly compact, and is very versatile. It applies easily to give good coverage, and leaves a very polished, healthy looking face! This only protects up to SPF12, but also has UVA and UVB rays, which protects your skin from premature ageing. Keep this one in your handbag for emergencies

Hello world! Charlize Theron make up!

Find out how to apply makeup like Charlize Theron

There is no denying that Charlize Theron is a natural beauty. The South African actress has delicate facial features coveted by women all over the world. Find out how you can achieve Charlize’s minimal, yet glam, makeup look.

Hydration is the key to getting a great makeup application. Begin by applying a serum or moisturizer to the entire face, and pat a bit of eye cream underneath the eyes. This will help makeup stay on longer and blend smoother.

Charlize takes good care of her skin, and it shows! Luckily, there are ways to fake her flawless complexion. Sweep some mineral foundation onto your face with a fluffy foundation brush. Blend it out evenly, remembering to cover the jaw line and neck as well. It’s best to be very light-handed when applying mineral foundation, to avoid having a caked-on look; you can always add more as you go along. Apply some concealer underneath the eyes, and use it to cover any redness or imperfections.

For Charlize’s natural eye makeup, simply apply a bronze or gold shimmer shadow onto your eyelids. Use the same shade to gently smudge the shadow onto your lower lash line. Curl your lashes before applying a couple coats of black mascara to the upper lashes, and a small amount to the lower lashes.

Blush and bright lips complete this look. Sweep a light rose powder blush on the apples of your cheeks, being careful not to overdo it. To add a dash of drama to an otherwise minimal makeup application, choose a brick-red lipstick that works with your skin-tone, and apply it using a very thin lip brush. A few tips and tricks for a perfect pout: dab a little bit of concealer or foundation on your lips first, to ensure the lipstick stays true-to-color on your lips. For longer-lasting lip color, blot the lips and apply a second coat of lipstick.

Take a cue from Charlize, and try a minimal makeup look to show off your natural beauty.

I will also put some video tutorial of her here! Enjoy!
